Sella, suspended one year for doping

Italian cyclist Emanuele Sella has been punished with a one-year suspension by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) after giving positive for EPO third-generation (CERA) at a checkpoint by surprise.

Transalpine was controlled by surprise on July 23, in an analysis carried out by the UCI while his former team, the CSF Group Navigare, did not participate in the last Tour de France.

Sella was only punished with a one-year suspension, rather than the two that makes the rules, for having cooperated with the prosecution in its anti-doping hearing last August.

Italian, who may return to compete on August 18 2009, won three stages of a mountain in the last Giro d'Italia which was proclaimed best rock climber and ended sixth in the overall standings.
